In conjunction with International Women’s Day, BLB&G associate and member of the New York City Bar Association’s United Nations Committee and African Affairs Committee, Catherine van Kampen served as a key organizer and speaker at the International Law Conference on the Status of Women held on March 9, 2020. Approximately 200 attendees listened to international women’s rights experts as they addressed the current status of women 25 years after the 4th Women’s Conference in Beijing, where then First Lady Hilary Clinton famously stated, “women's rights are human rights, and human rights are women’s rights.” The first panel of the evening was moderated by BLB&G partner Lauren Ormsbee, and included panelists from the United Nations, the Thirty Percent Coalition, the Women’s Refugee Commission, the Hopeland Charity Foundation, and the International Women’s Health Coalition. The conference also featured a keynote address by Consolee Nishimwe, author of Tested to the Limit, and concluded with the awarding of the Epiq Women 2020 Awards for Justice & Advocacy and the Huntington National Bank’s Her Heroes 2020 Lifetime Achievement Awards. Dale G. Berger, philanthropist and wife of BLB&G founding partner, Max Berger, received a Her Hero Award for co-founding The Dale and Max Berger Public Interest Law Fellowship at Columbia Law School and for her lifelong commitment to international women’s rights and public service advocacy. The conference highlighted the challenges women face and the work still needing to be done around the world towards gender equality and women’s rights.
