Jorge G. Tenreiro is a securities litigation partner in BLB&G’s New York office. Having served as Chief Litigation Counsel and Senior Trial Counsel for the Division of Enforcement at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”), Jorge is a leading authority in complex federal civil litigations, particularly in the crypto asset and cyber sectors, with an extensive career dedicated to civil litigation and securities enforcement.
At the SEC, Jorge spearheaded a national civil litigation program comprised of over 120 attorneys. His leadership and strategic acumen led to groundbreaking litigations against high-profile entities and individuals such as Sam Bankman-Fried, Terraform Labs, and Binance, earning him recognition as one of the SEC’s most formidable litigators. Jorge’s tenure at the SEC was marked by significant courtroom successes. These included favorable jury verdicts in multiple cases, such as SEC v. Terraform and other securities fraud matters, as well as obtaining favorable rulings in complex, highly contested litigations such as SEC v. Telegram Group, Inc., all resulting in landmark settlements favorable to harmed investors. His role as lead trial counsel in major litigations solidified his expertise in navigating complex legal challenges in emerging sectors and delivering persuasive arguments in high-stakes environments.
Jorge also served as Enforcement Counsel to the SEC Chair and held senior management positions in the SEC’s Crypto Assets & Cyber Unit. His efforts established critical legal precedents, particularly in the fintech space, and his collaboration with the U.S. Department of Justice strengthened enforcement efforts across federal agencies. Throughout his SEC career, Jorge received multiple accolades and recognitions for his work on behalf of harmed investors, including the SEC Chair’s Award for Excellence and Investor Protection and the SEC’s New York Regional Office’s Award for Outstanding Contributions to Litigation. National publications and commentators have called Jorge one of the most outstanding trial lawyers ever at the SEC and lauded his tenacious skills as a litigator.
Jorge’s influence extends beyond the courtroom. He actively participates in several professional associations, including the Hispanic National Bar Association, where he serves on the planning committee, and the LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York, where he serves on the judiciary committee. He is a sought-after speaker and lecturer, sharing insights on government enforcement trends at international conferences and academic institutions, and has contributed to prominent legal publications. In 2020, Jorge was named one of the nation’s top 40 LGBTQ+ lawyers under 40 by the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association.
Jorge previously clerked for the Honorable Julio M. Fuentes of the 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals and the Honorable Allyne R. Ross of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York and was a litigation associate at a prominent law firm in New York City. He received his J.D. from Yale Law School and his B.A., magna cum laude, from Yale University.
